Mantis just outside my front door. I used two flashes for these shots, the second one I held with my free hand. The lighting was too flat and boring with just one flash or no flash. I also used a 3x close up lens with the 18-135mm kit lens, which the 3x works well with. When I do shots like this the second flash unit is the main light and I have the on camera flash output set to about 1.5-3 stops less light than the main which is about 1 stop above normal output when using TTL. Otherwise I use manual mode and adjust by eye.
